Masters Swimming: What is it?
Masters swimming is age group swimming for adults, aged 18 and over.
Competitions are held regularly at both local and national and even international
levels. Swimmers compete in their age groups in 5 year groupings, with relays
defined by the total age of the swimmers on the relay team. In addition to pool
meets, many masters enjoy competing in, or just completing, open water swims,
usually during the summer months, in lakes or protected outside waterways. Postal
meets are also available from time to time, where swimmers swim an event for time,
usually something like a mile, in their own pool, all on the same weekend, and then
mail in the results to a central location that tabulates them and recognizes the
outcome.
While participation in any meets or swims is never a requirement, swimmers are
encouraged to find an avenue of participation that appeals to them. This can be an
aid to maintain motivation to get cold and wet and help follow progress.
Killer Whales Masters:
The Killer Whales Swim Club (KWSC) was organized in the 1970's as an age group
team for youngsters aged 6 and over. They attend competitions monthly and hold
practices nightly at the Dick Mealy Memorial Pool on the Mark Morris High School
campus in Longview.
KWSC, in response to a desire on the part of a number of parents and adults to
participate in the sport in a more organized fashion than just putting in their laps by
themselves, formed the KWSC Master Team in June, 2009.
Members of the team participate for many reasons. Some just want to maintain an
exercise program. Some have chosen swimming as an activity that might be less
damaging to hip, knee, and ankle joints than running or even biking. Some are
looking for competitions to help keep up the motivation to maintain their conditioning
program. Some would like to see if they might have any chance of beating their kids
in a race...before the kids get too old and fast. Some would like to participate in
open water swims and some are tri-athletes, practicing what is often the most difficult
leg of the triathlon for many athletes. Some want to improve their swimming skills for
vacation times at the beach or other water activities. Some just want someone else
to make up a practice for them and have some other people to swim with. Practices
are designed to try to satisfy all of these needs.

Swimming is not just for kids.
What We Do:
We practice at the Dick Mealy Memorial Pool in the evenings, sharing some time with
the kids team as they complete their practices and with some time of our own.
Practices are arranged to allow more experienced swimmers to complete longer and
more challenging swims and sets, while allowing less experienced swimmers to
progress in their swimming skills at their own pace.
We do not expect that swimmers will be world class athletes before they start. We
only expect that swimmers have at least minimal swimming skills with basic strokes.
We will spend some time teaching new strokes to those who are not comfortable with
them, and teaching competitive skills to those who have not competed on a swim
team before. Masters swimming also makes some allowances for previous
competitive experiences for those who may last have swum in college or high school,
or even their one-room schoolhouse after a 5 mile walk uphill in the deep snow.
We also participate with the age groupers in some of their meets both in our home
pool and at some travel meets when these are sanctioned by Masters Swimming.
